Міждисциплінарний підхід CLIL як інструмент розвитку культурної дипломатії на факультеті історії, політології та міжнародних відносин

The CLIL interdisciplinary approach is widely applied by the Professors of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Translation Studies, Faculty of History, Political Science International Studies Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, who teach students FLs majoring in International and Translation Studies (TS). Through this approach, both students and foreign language (FL) Professors act as independent cultural diplomats, mediating intercultural dialogue through education, research, and translation, thereby fostering deeper connections between cultures and countries. CLIL methodology is characterised by content, communication, cognition and culture.

FL Instructors are to provide learners with a rich socio-cultural awareness and life competences, rather than only linguistic training on the target language. This means that the instructor’s task is no longer just teaching the language system itself, but teaching beyond language, incorporating the capacity to use the target language through topics related to the students’ interests and needs. As it is largely presupposed in Foreign Language Acquisition theory, a foreign language teacher is not only an important external factor but also a key agent to help achieve learners’ success through many kinds of contributions.

Consequently, Project ERASMUS+ project «Boosting Culinary Education and Training» No. 2023-1-LV01-KA220-VET-000161266 (Латвія, Литва, Естонія, Україна) INTERNATIONAL MULTIDISCIPLINARY HACKATHON “VET PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & INTERNATIONAL LABOUR MARKET MOBILITY, Event moderator: Veroniia MARTYNIUK – PhD, Associate Professor, CLIL teacher-trainer (Ukraine) has become a critical moment and the art of teaching. During a 2-day INTERNATIONAL MULTIDISCIPLINARY HACKATHON the students and EFL Professors of the faculty were invited as volunteers.

The head of the Dept. of Modern Foreign Languages &TS, Associate Professor Zoya KUDELKO delivered a CLIL class “Boosting Culinary English-Speaking Activity” and Associate Professor Valentyna BOHATYRETS took her floor in the section “Gastro Hackathon to Push Vet Expertise to the Next Level” and gave a presentation on “Cooking up Global Connections: How Gastrodiplomacy Uses Food to Bridge Cultures & Build International Relationships”.

The students of our faculty were a valuable asset to this incredible event proving the fact that ‘a globalized world requires educators and students who are braced to respond to many diverse contextual realities and key concepts – flexibility, adaptability and contextual awareness’.

It was a real challenge for our students – fluent in English though novices and amateurs in DIY cooking a “nouvelle cuisine”- the HACKATHON Du Jour menu specialty “Milk Balls” in HACKaLAB. The most exciting moment was the evaluation of the dishes by the outstanding restaurateurs and culinary professionals. The cherry on top of cake was the nomination of our student Kateryna Chornobai as a winner. All the students got certificates and preserved sweet memories.  Undeniably, it was the Hackathon to be remembered.
